Ethical Communication Versus Effective Communication
Ethical communication has to do with morality. here you think about what is appropriate, what has moral justification, what has positive effect/impact on the receiver, and what should not be misleading. If we are to look at it critically, ethical communication could be effective depending on the receiver but effective communication is not necessarily needed to be ethical. As we have individual differences, many people in the world relies or deceit. telling truth sometimes does not go down well with individuals. People are happy when information are been framed. Any framed information are not truth because it lack credibility, but people like to be hearing soothing things. This is a common practice by politicians and business people. Politicians are fond of making broken promises. They frame most of their communication but the people still believed in them because of gratification and favor seeking. If the electorates are skeptical of politicians thoughts, then they would be conscious of giving their supports and vote.
In effective communication, the way the speaker presents himself and how it is assimilated is important. In effective communication, the context, body language, inference, and listening takes important roles. In context, you consider, age, sex, region, demography, and intellectual abilities of the receiver. body language also helps in passing out messages. The way and manner in which body is moved, your posture, and demonstration together with facial expression improves understanding in communication. Emotion can also interfere with communication. considering emotions, language and conceptual barriers, these are also essential in effective communication. Listening attentively helps in effective communication. active listening gives way to good processing of information and feedback. without listening good, the content in communication will not be clear and this leads to misunderstanding. All these processes does not necessarily lead to ethical communication. Like i said earlier, politicians can speak effectively but it might not have ethical considerations. Ethical communication deals with moral justification, facts, and figure. The process may not be effective depending on assimilation. effective communication has to do with clarity and good processing, it may or may not be ethical.
In one of my experience while working as a media/public relations manager for a local government in Nigeria, all you have to do is obey the last order. Propaganda was greatly entrenched into the system. Everything are being manipulated. You will definitely labelled as a rebel for not following direction. Now, i see communication in a different level. your voice needed to be hear and you have the right to question anything you are not sure of before going to the press.
